About

The Folk View Platform is not yet available to the public.  A release date has not been established.

Short and Simple

Nothing to Install – The Folk View Platform is a service, not a software package unto itself.  It is based primarily on the software developed by the Hyper Blocks team, but there is nothing to download or install.

Subdomain – The Folk View Platform has established several domain names for members to express themselves in the format of http://YourName.Ourdomains.com.  This becomes your sign in name and your home page.

Domain – If you would rather operate your own domain name on the Folk View Platform, we can arrange it for you.  We recommend you first take a test drive at one of our many domain names before considering this option.

What Can it Do?

More than just a content management system (CMS), the Folk View Platform allows each member (subdomain) to create, promote, and maintain his or her own blog, forums, news service, online store, donations, and other web services while providing a central location for each community (the domain).

Folk View History

2001 – Back in the Day - The Folk View Platform is about as grass roots as it can get and it has seen its fair share of set backs.  It started in the hay day of blog and content management software with one person hacking away in perl with a flat file database backend.  The basic concept was that community forums do not need overlords or demigods to dictate and sometimes abuse policy.  Instead, individual members could moderate their own forums and membership as a whole could decide which forums are best suited for the community (which are hot and which are not).  At the time, the software had no name.

2006 – Folk View - An accident resulting in significant brain damage caused the original developer to stop working on the project.  Fortunately, a few of his friends adopted the basic idea.  Although a few bits and pieces remain written in perl, the majority is now PHP with a MySql back end.

2009 – Hyper Blocks – The development team realized they were fielding two distinctly different types of questions; code and concept.  Some volunteers offered great insight into desired features, others offered very good advice on writing the computer code which might make those features possible, but very few could do both.  In fact, the two groups tended to communicate very poorly.  The project was split into two branches; Concept (FolkView.com) and Code (Hyperblocks.com).

FolkView.com – Is the base for most users.  It is where you can discuss features, tell us what you like, what you do not, and what you would like to see at the front of the development list.  It is where you can report bugs, add user documentation, and generally assist in the development of this platform without knowing a lick of code.

HyperBlocks.com – Is the base for programmers and developers.  Although the Folk View Community Platform is not released to the public as a software package, each of the building blocks used for our platform is available for download and discussion from Hyperblocks.com
